Ag Scholarship Applications Sought

TURLOCK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AG COMMITTEE GEARS UP FOR 9TH ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON
 
Turlock – The Turlock Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee is preparing for their Annual Ag Scholarship Luncheon. The Turlock Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee is dedicated to supporting events and activities aimed at developing future agricultural leaders, educating the public and informing policy makers. Over the past 8 years the committee has awarded 128 scholarships to area students totaling over $85,050 with an additional $48,000 donated towards community wide educational programs.
 
The Turlock Chamber of Commerce Ag Scholarship Luncheon, March 16th, 2009 at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds Turf Club, will present this year’s group of students with scholarships towards their college education. “Every year we receive remarkable applicants and we look forward to helping them achieve their academic goals.” said Committee Chair, Joe Pereira Jr.
 
The scholarship awards are based on student’s interested in a current or future career in the agricultural industry. They need to have a history of scholastic achievements, participation in community involvement, and extracurricular activities. Students also need to submit a one page essay with their application along with a letter of recommendation. Every scholarship request the committee receives is carefully reviewed, but not all applications are guaranteed a scholarship.
  
The eligibility for the scholarship application is:
  • Must be a graduating High School Senior from Turlock, Pitman, Turlock Christian, Hughson, Denair, Livingston, Hilmar or Delhi Schools.
  • Funds will be awarded to full-time students majoring in agriculture in a California College or University
  • Enrolling in at least one agriculture course
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA – Transcripts must be verified by school official
  • Intention of staying in California for schooling
 
The scholarship application deadline for this year is February, 26th, 2009. Applications are available from area High School Agriculture Teachers, Agricultural Department Heads, or the Counseling Office. 2008 Committee Activities
 
Ag Scholarship Luncheon                  $15,250
The Turlock Chamber Ag Committee Scholarship Program is intended to interest and encouraged capable young people to enter the agricultural industry. It is the committee’s belief that everyone benefits from our scholarship program. The students receive assistance towards attaining their chosen educational goal and the industry receives the new talent needed to remain competitive in today’s business world.
 
4-H Farmyard Experience                 $9,000
For many fairgoers the 4-H Farmyard Experience was a huge draw and sponsored by the Turlock Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee. Through this sponsorship many visitors have learned more about agriculture in the valley, progressive and innovative means of farming, as well as updates on animal health.
