Residents and guests at Covenant Village of Turlock recently enjoyed a not-so-mad tea party as the popular children’s novel “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” came to life at the retirement home.

On the lawn outside the retirement community, the Queen of Hearts knocked a croquet ball through a pink flamingo wicket, while the White Rabbit pranced around exclaiming “I’m late! I’m late!”

Covenant Village Director of Resident Services Adele Barnard planned the “Alice in Wonderland”-themed event for residents as a way for everyone to “engage the air of whimsy that comes with children’s novels without being childish.”

Residents and their guests created their own hats to wear to the tea party, participated in a “Alice in Wonderland” trivia game, and even joined the Queen of Hearts for a game of croquet.

Although the event was created for the enjoyment of the residents of Covenant Village, it was also designed to encourage them.

“Alice learned to face challenges with the tools she had,” said Barnard. “We all face challenges. I suggested that we consider how we might be like some of the characters in the story and that we use Alice as inspiration to face our personal challenges with an adventurous spirit and wide-eyed consideration.”

Nationally accredited Covenant Village of Turlock is one of 14 retirement communities nationwide that are administered by Skokie, Ill.-based Covenant Retirement Communities Inc. One of the nation’s largest not-for-profit senior services organizations, Covenant Retirement Communities operates communities in eight states and is a ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
