Armed man arrested after hour-long standoff with officers Thursday afternoon

On Thursday, February 16th, 2023, at 2:02 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported suspicious person near the intersection of N Denair Ave and Wayside Dr, Turlock, who was possibly carrying a handgun.

When officers arrived in the area, they found and made contact with a man later identified as Joseph Reina, 35, of Modesto, in the 900 block of N Mitchell Ave.

Officers gave Reina several lawful orders to drop everything he was holding his hands, however, he refused to comply. He was eventually surrounded by several additional officers and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies.

Officers and deputies had a standoff with Reina which lasted about an hour and ended with Reina giving up and dropping everything, which included a handgun.

Reina was arrested without a use of force and the gun was recovered.

Reina was searched incident to arrest and officers located narcotics on his person.

Reina was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of possession of a controlled substance while armed, carrying a concealed firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon or person addicted to a narcotic, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, attempting to deter or resist an executive officer in the performance of their duty by means of threat or violence, falsely identifying to a peace officer, and possession of methamphetamines.
