At about 3:51pm Sunday, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office responded to a suspicious person in the 3100 block of N. Quincy Road in Denair.

The caller stated a man had been trespassing and was armed with a weapon.

Deputies arrived on scene and requested Turlock Police assist with a canine.

After locating the man in the 3300 block of N. Quincy Road, deputies made several attempts to establish a dialogue and brought in multiple less-than-lethal options. They tried to de-escalate the man into complying with their instructions.

While speaking with the man, he refused to drop the weapon and charged the deputies without warning. As a result, a deputy-involved shooting occurred and the man was struck by the deputy’s gunfire.

Denair Fire and American Medical Response arrived on scene, rendering aid to the man and transporting him to Emanuel Medical Center where he was declared deceased. He’s yet to be publicly identified.

Neither the deputies, assisting TPD officer, nor his canine were injured during the incident.

The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after a deputy-involved shooting.

Three separate investigations have been launched. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office are conducting independent criminal investigations, to determine if the deputy’s actions were justified and excused by law. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit is also conducting an administrative investigation to determine if the deputy’s actions were consistent with department policy.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information that could assist is encouraged to call Detective Summerton at 209-525-5625.
