Turlock police arrested an assailant Wednesday night after he attacked a male victim with a metal pipe.

Mauricio Perez, 37, was arrested and booked for assault with a deadly weapon.

According to Turlock police spokesperson Officer Mayra Lewis, Perez was trying to collect cans outside of a residence in the 200 block of Hamilton shortly before 10:30 p.m.

An occupant came out and told Perez to stop, but then the suspect hit the victim in the face with a metal pipe and fled, said Lewis.

Officers identified the suspect as Perez and were able to locate him at his residence.

At first, Perez would not cooperate with police, but he was on active searchable probation and were able to take him into custody once they got in the home.
