Bicycle, Pedestrian Transportation Plan on Turlock Planning Commission Agenda

TurlockCityNews.com

On Thursday, the Turlock Planning Commission will consider approving the Active Transportation Plan (ATP) that has been in the works for more than a year.

If adopted, following recommendation by Planning Commission and approval from Turlock City Council, the ATP will replace the existing bikeway map that is part of the 2012 City’s General Plan.

The ATP, or Bike/Pedestrian Master Plan, is intended to review Turlock’s existing system of bike lanes, sidewalks, and crosswalks. Where problem areas are found, infrastructure improvements will be planned.

Those infrastructure improvements won’t come immediately after the plan’s completion, as funding must be identified to complete any City projects. But having a completed ATP could put the City of Turlock in line for millions of dollars in previously unavailable state and federal grants.

The plan also looks to develop educational programs and initiatives to encourage walking or biking.

To ensure that the ATP had the input of the Turlock community, there was an extensive outreach and communication plan. A Citizen’s Advisory Team was also formed to help staff develop the ATP by providing direct community input on biking and walking needs in the City.

If approved by a majority vote of the Turlock Planning Commission, City Council will vote to amend the General Plan to include the ATP.

On Thursday, Planning Commission will also consider approving a conditional use permit for the Calvary Chapel of Turlock to operate within the current location of Red Brick Bar & Grill.

Turlock Planning Commission will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the Yosemite Room of City Hall, 156 S. Broadway.
