California State Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) remains committed to passing new water bonds to increase California’s water supply, despite the defeat of his proposed bill.

Cannella joined with State Sen. Andy Vidak (R-Hanford) in January to introduce SB 927. The proposal was for a $9.2 billion water bond, with $3 billion in new water storage, $2.5 billion to protect the Delta water supply, and $1 billion for clean drinking water, with a boost of $400 million for disadvantaged communities.

Cannella issued a statement on Tuesday after the defeat of SB 927 in the Senate Natural Resources and Water committee.

“SB 927 received bipartisan support, demonstrating the need for a water bond that will create new water for California,” he said in the statement. “Our current drought has highlighted the fact that we have already taken too long to get started on rebuilding our water system, and we must take action immediately.”

With the defeat of SB 927, Cannella will continue to support other water bond proposals for the state.

“I look forward to working with my fellow legislators on passing a new bond for the November ballot that will increase storage, protect the Delta, and provide more clean drinking water,” said Cannella. “I am supporting other water bond proposals that meet the same goals of SB 927, including AB 2686 by Assemblyman Perea and SB 1250 by Senator Hueso.”
