City Pushes Skate Park Opening to Late July

Originally, Director of Development Services Mike Pitcock had stated that a ribbon cutting for Turlock’s relocated Brandon Koch Memorial Skate Park could have been in the works for mid-June or early July. However, the completion date of the Turlock skate park has once again been pushed back.

Turlock has been without a skate park since the original one on Starr Avenue was closed down in August 2015.

The new designs on the upcoming skate park are the result of Wormhoudt Inc., of Santa Cruz. The cookies have been painted, the cement has been set, and the scenery is beginning to take on a real shape. Rails, ramps, and stair steps are all taking shape, but the skate park is still going to need some more time until it is completed.

According to Principal Civil Engineer and Project Manager Nathan Bray, some items in the skate park are still waiting to be completed by the contractor. This would include the painting of exposed metal and finishing storm drain improvements.

“While the skate park project has taken longer than anticipated, progress is occurring. The contractor is nearing completion and the work should be completed in the next few weeks,” noted Bray.

Turlock Parks and Public Facilities Maintenance staff are working on the transition from the skate park to the rest of Donnelly Park. According to Bray, this includes a transition from the slopes to the grass area and a sidewalk that will go from the parking lot to the skate park.

“While I was anticipating the grand opening of the skate park to occur early July, it’s looking like it is going to be pushed back to late July,” noted Bray.

When the work is completed, Bray noted that the intent is to open the skate park with a soft opening and have a grand opening/ribbon cutting ceremony for the park.

“The City appreciates the patience the skating community has had during the transitional time that Turlock did not have a skate park.”
