Council’s Special Meeting Introduces Grand Jury to Turlock, Officially

The Turlock City Attorney is believed to have an appointment with the county grand jury and is asking the Turlock City Council’s permission to waive attorney-client privilege so she can talk about confidential documents.

There are memos dated December 3rd and January 8th that City Attorney Phaedra Norton may need to speak on to the grand jury.

The memos are confidential but one is believed to have been leaked to the Turlock Journal and the contents released to the public by the paper. The contents of the leaked confidential memo include advice from City Attorney Phaedra Norton to Mary Jackson concerning a possible conflict of interest dealing with the Vintage Lounge piano bar appeal, the owner’s previous legal counsel Axel Gomez, and Councilwoman Mary Jackson.

Mayor John Lazar does believe the memos involve Councilwoman Mary Jackson. The agenda does not say why the memos are being requested and the City Council does not have to speak on the item as it is on the consent calendar. A Council Member may pull the item off the calendar for discussion.

The Special Turlock City Council Meeting will be held on February 3, 2009 at 7pm at City Hall.
