Crowell Elementary School sixth graders Abel Medina and Nevien Mohsen were selected as the Turlock Unified School District’s Character Counts Students of the Month for the character trait of “citizenship.”

Nevien moved to the United States with her family when she was 8 years old and according to her teacher, Patricia Langpaap, she has demonstrated amazing development in English and can now read and write as well — if not better than — some of her peers.

The amazing young lady works hard on her academics and began playing violin in her free time about two years ago. Recently she performed “Let it Go”, the hit song from Disney’s Frozen, but only after she had to earned the right to perform as determined by her parents.

“Crowell has the best teachers and principals. They help us to calm down when we need to calm down and they teach us that it doesn’t matter what people look like it is what’s inside that counts,” said Nevien, who added that “character is doing what is right when no one is looking.”

Abel’s teacher Scott Cortez says Abel was selected because of his perseverance, his amazing insight on classroom assignments and discussions and his willingness to take on challenges while balancing his time. Abel is active in football and baseball.

“I am honored to be his teacher,” said Cortez.
