To celebrate and honor the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington in 1963 – one of the largest human rights rallies in U.S. history – the California State University, Stanislaus Department of History will present a free lecture by guest speaker Steve Estes.
As a professor of history at Sonoma State University, Estes will address the evolution of race relations and racial politics – particularly within the American South – since the 1963 March on Washington.
Estes attended Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in History and Economics. He then went on to receive his Masters Degree in History at the University of Georgia, and his PhD at the University of North Carolina.
Before he began his teaching career at Sonoma State University in 2002, Estes worked as an interviewer for the Southern Oral History Program, a counselor at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan, a teacher in the Sunflower County Freedom Project in Mississippi, a researcher at the American Youth Policy Forum in Washington, DC, and a guest curator at the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco.
Estes has written two books, the 2005 release “I Am Man! Race, Manhood and the Struggle for Civil Rights,” and 2007's “Ask and Tell: Gay and Lesbian Veterans Speak Out.”
The lecture “The Promised Land? Race and Southern History Since the Civil Rights Movement” is free and open to the public. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 26, in Demergasso-Bava Hall Room 167 at CSU Stanislaus in Turlock.
