At about 10:32am Monday morning, Turlock Police responded to shots heard in front of Cunningham Elementary School in the 300 block of W. Linwood Avenue.

Several different callers reported the incident, stating that several teenagers had been seen running away from the area in various directions.

Cunningham Elementary School and Fusion Charter School were immediately placed on lockdown.

Officers arrived in the area and detained at least five different teens at various nearby locations. The teens’ ages ranged from 14 to 17, and at least one of them was a known gang member who was on juvenile probation for carrying a loaded firearm.

As officers canvassed the area, they located at least three shell casings in front of a residence across the street from the school.

In-field show-ups were conducted, although no specific teen was able to be identified as the shooter.

Officers continued to canvas the area and eventually located a 9mm ghost gun hidden in a bush behind Subway.

The gun was believed to be connected to the shooting and was tested.

All detainees were released as there was no probable cause to make any arrests and the lockdowns were lifted.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information that could assist in it is encouraged to call Officer Hiram Duncan at 209-668-1200.
