|

A male bicyclist was hit and killed on Fulkerth Road just east of Bystrum Road in Turlock at approximately 6:10 p.m. Monday evening.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the cyclist, whose name is being withheld pending identification and notification of next of kin, was riding westbound in the westbound lane of Fulkerth Road, near the edge of the road, wearing a black sweatshirt and jeans.

Diane Medina, 34, driving a 2010 GMC in the same direction, collided with the cyclist throwing him onto the right shoulder.

Medina did not see the cyclist until she was a short distance away and did not react in time to avoid colliding with the cyclist.

The GMC came to a stop in the westbound lane of Fulkerth Road after the collision.

Mayra Hernandez, 28, driving a 2004 Honda, was traveling several hundred yards behind the GMC when she observed the GMC slowing abruptly and pulling to the shoulder just past the collision site.

Hernandez did not see the bicycle in the westbound lane, as her attention was drawn to the GMC. The Honda struck the bicycle and dragged iit several hundred feet until she was able to come to a stop.

Another passing motorist stopped and assisted in removing the bicycle from underneath the Honda. They all then returned to the original collision scene and located the injured cyclist.

Emergency crews attempted lifesaving measures upon arriving on scene, but the cyclist had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to have been a contributing factor in the collision.

The collision remains under investigation.
