Don Pedro Fourth of July Firework Show Cancelled Due to Drought

The Don Pedro Recreation Agency announced Tuesday that the lake’s annual Fourth of July firework show will not be held this year.

According to the agency, the cancellation comes due to the low water level in Lake Don Pedro.

“Due to the reduction of boat launching to a single two-lane ramp at Fleming Meadows and the diminished available surface acreage on the water in the fireworks fall-out zone, there will not be a fireworks show in 2014,” a press release reads.

The show traditionally attracts thousands of spectators.

The cancellation is just one of many operational changes occurring at Don Pedro Reservoir, which is owned and operated by the Turlock and Modesto Irrigation Districts. Following three consecutive years of drought, the lake has dropped to reveal a submerged gold mine that was last seen in 1992. The reservoir is expected to effectively empty this summer.

The low water has forced the move of a floating houseboat marina, previously docked in Moccasin Point. It is expected to move to the west end of the lake, near Fleming Meadows.

The Fleming Meadow boat launch will be reduced from five lanes to two. The Blue Oaks boat launch ramp will close entirely, as will Moccasin Point launch ramp.

Speed limits on the lake will change, too. Several areas will feature a 5 mph limit due to the low water elevation and reconfigured boat moorings.

Not all Don Pedro Recreation Agency operations will change this summer.

The swimming lagoon, Trading Post Store, Snack Shack, and all camping areas of Fleming Meadows will continue normal operations. Partial hook-up campsites and the group camp facility at Blue Oaks will remain open as well, though tent-only areas will open only on holiday weekends and as needed for overflow camping. The full hook-up campsites will be open Moccasin point, but only two of four tent camping areas will be open.
