On Monday, October 17th, 2022, at 1:43 am, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a security check at the intersection of N Golden State Blvd and W Canal Dr, Turlock, after a volunteer firefighter had come across a running vehicle in gear at a traffic light with its driver passed out behind the wheel.

Officers arrived on scene, blocked the vehicle using their own vehicles, and woke up the driver, later identified as Juan Rojas Sandoval, 35, of Turlock.

Officers began speaking with Sandoval and noticed that he was exhibiting objective symptoms of being under the influence, so they removed him from his vehicle and asked him if he would be willing to participate in standardized field sobriety tests. He agreed and completed the tests.

Based on the totality of the circumstances, officers determined that Sandoval was under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs.

Sandoval was arrested and a search of his person incident to arrest led to the discovery of cocaine. Sandoval was then transported to a local hospital and provided an evidentiary blood sample as required by California’s implied consent law.

Afterwards, Sandoval was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 or greater, driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs, and possession of a controlled substance.
