Drunk Driver Arrested After Crashing Into Curb

IMG_0547-1

At about 10:58pm Thursday, Turlock Police responded to a hit-and-run that had just occurred in the 3100 block of Countryside Drive.

The caller had reported that a vehicle had gone onto the curb causing airbag deployment, and its occupants had fled on foot.

Officers arrived on scene and located the vehicle abandoned, still on the curb.

Because there wasn’t damage to any property other than the vehicle and no one was injured, the incident was determined not to be a traffic collision.

Officers contacted three subjects in the area, including the driver, who had walked back to his vehicle while officers were waiting with it.

All three were identified, including driver Luis Maldonado, 28, of Delhi, and passenger Brandy Alardin, 30, of Turlock.

When officers had their dispatcher run the three, they discovered that Alardin had a $6,500 local misdemeanor bench warrant for battery.

While speaking with Maldonado, Officer Arroyo noticed that he was displaying objective symptoms of being under the influence, so she asked him if he’d be willing to participate in standardized field sobriety tests. Maldonado agreed and completed the tests, but performed poorly on them.

Based on the totality of the circumstances, Arroyo determined Maldonado was under the influence of alcohol and arrested him.

Maldonado chose to provide two breath samples at the scene for his chemical test required by California’s implied consent law.

Afterward, Maldonado was released on a citation on the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Additionally, he was issued a driver’s license suspension order and his vehicle was impounded.

Alardin was also arrested and released on a citation for her warrant.
