On Sunday, June 11th, 2023, at 12:30 am, California Highway Patrol officers near the intersection of E Olive Ave and N Golden State Blvd, Turlock, observed a man driving a vehicle fail to stop at a red light, crash into another vehicle, and continue driving, so they began chasing him.

The man eventually stopped near the intersection of E Main St and N First St and got out of his vehicle after realizing that CHP officers were behind him. He was identified as Brian Medeiros, 20, of Delhi.

Turlock Police Department officers responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

Medeiros displayed objective symptoms of being under the influence, so he was asked if he would be willing to participate in standardized field sobriety tests and blow into a preliminary alcohol screening device. Medeiros agreed and did so.

Based on the totality of the circumstances, officers determined that Medeiros was under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested.

Medeiros provided two breath samples at the scene as required by California’s implied consent law. The breath samples revealed that Medeiros had a blood alcohol content of .08% or greater.

Back at the scene, the vehicle that Medeiros had hit was a gray 2015 Ford Focus. Its driver, who was its only occupant, suffered minor injuries and was ground transported by American Medical Response to a local hospital. Medeiros himself had been driving a red 2013 BMW 3 Series. Medeiros was its only occupant and he also suffered minor injuries.

Both vehicles sustained moderate damage and were deemed inoperable as a result of the collision, requiring them to be towed away.

Medeiros was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury to another person, driving with a blood alcohol content of .08% or greater causing great bodily injury to another person, and fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in injury or death to another person.

Medeiros was also issued an administrative driver’s license suspension order and his vehicle was impounded.
