At about 10:02pm Monday night, a Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a reckless driver at Chicago Avenue and Vernon Avenue in Modesto, so he attempted to make a traffic stop on him.

The driver, later identified as Sergio Lopez, 20, of Modesto, failed to yield to the deputy and a pursuit ensued.

Lopez drove to Downtown Modesto and got onto southbound State Route 99.

Once on the freeway, Lopez began driving at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. The sheriff’s helicopter got overhead and began monitoring as Lopez approached Turlock.

As Lopez approached the W. Monte Vista Avenue exit, he attempted to take it, however, lost control due to a tractor-trailer being in his way. Lopez drove off the off-ramp, rolling his vehicle over into the embankment.

Lopez exited his wrecked vehicle and was met by deputies who took him into custody.

Through the investigation, Lopez was discovered to be under the influence of alcohol, have a suspended driver’s license, and be on probation for driving with a blood alcohol content of .08% or greater and possession of a firearm by a juvenile ward.

The California Highway Patrol, Turlock Fire, and American Medical Response responded to handle the collision.

Lopez was ground transported by American Medical Response to a local hospital with minor injuries.

After Lopez was released from the hospital, he was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of fleeing from a peace officer in a vehicle with disregard for the safety of persons or property, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood alcohol content of .08% or greater, reckless driving, and violation of probation.
