At about 2:10am Sunday morning, Officer Marquez observed a vehicle being driven during darkness without taillights, so he attempted to make a traffic stop on it.

Instead of stopping, the driver of the vehicle accelerated away from Marquez at a high rate of speed and crashed into a retaining wall in the 800 block of N. Olive Avenue.

The Turlock Fire Department and American Medical Response were requested.

The vehicle had two occupants, driver Julian Moreno, 18, of Atwater, and his 17-year-old female passenger.

Both Moreno and his passenger suffered injuries and were transported by American Medical Response to local hospitals, however, the extent of their injuries are unknown.

Moreno displayed objective symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol, so he was arrested.

A blood sample was collected from Moreno after a search warrant was obtained.

After Moreno was medically cleared, he was issued a driver’s license suspension order and was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury or death to another person, child abuse or endangerment under circumstances likely to produce great bodily harm or death, driving without a valid license, and driving a vehicle during darkness without lighted taillamps.
