Drunk driver arrested after striking parked vehicle and fleeing on foot Friday night

On Friday, May 6th, 2022, at 9:15 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported vehicle collision with unknown injuries in front of Denair Manor Apartments, 550 Wayside Dr, Turlock.

When officers arrived on scene, they found three vehicles involved. One was a blue Nissan SUV, one was a gray Nissan sedan, and the other was a blue Ford sedan.

The blue Nissan SUV had two occupants, its driver, Octavio Macias, 23, of Turock, and his passenger. Both suffered minor injuries. Macias refused to be transported to the hospital while his passenger was ground transported by American Medical Response to a local hospital. The other two vehicles were parked on the side of the road and unoccupied.

As officers attempted to make contact with Macias, he began to flee on foot, however, was quickly apprehended without further incident around the corner in the 1300 block of N Denair Ave.

Officers noticed that Macias was exhibiting signs of being under the influence, so they asked him to participate in standardized field sobriety tests. Macias participated in one, however, was unable to participate in the other two because of how intoxicated he was. An open alcohol container was also found in his vehicle.

All three vehicles sustained moderate damage. The blue Nissan SUV and the gray Nissan sedan were deemed inoperable as a result of the collision, requiring them to be towed away. The blue Ford sedan was not deemed inoperable and it was left parked on the side of the road.

Officers began investigating and learned from witnesses that the blue Nissan SUV was westbound in the 500 block of Wayside Drive when it struck the left rear of the gray Nissan sedan. The impact pushed the gray Nissan sedan and caused the front of it to strike the rear of the blue Ford sedan. After the blue Nissan sedan struck the gray Nissan sedan, it veered to the left and came to final rest facing southbound in the middle of the road. One of the witnesses reported to officers that the blue Nissan SUV was engaged in some sort of reckless driving activity with another vehicle, a silver sedan, which did not stick around.

Macias was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 or greater, resisting a peace officer, and hit and run causing property damage. He was also issued a driver’s license suspension order.
