Drunk man on bail arrested after leading officers on pursuit early Thursday morning

On Thursday, January 13th, 2022, at 1:18 am, a Turlock Police officer at the intersection of Lander Ave and E Linwood Ave, Turlock, on-viewed a driver violate the California Vehicle Code. The officer got behind the vehicle and made a traffic stop on it, at which point the driver pulled over into a parking lot.

As the officer got out of his vehicle to make contact with the driver, later identified as Hugo Barriga, 35, of Keyes, Barriga took off from him through the parking lot at high rates of speed and in a reckless manner.

The officer initiated a pursuit and chased Barriga eastbound on E Linwood Ave, before he ultimately collided into a fence on Golf Rd.

Barriga then exited his vehicle and began to flee from the officer on foot, however, he eventually gave up and surrendered as additional officers arrived in the area.

Speeds during the pursuit reached approximately 70 miles per hour.

Barriga sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision. He was ground transported by the Turlock Police Department to a local hospital.

After Barriga was released from the hospital, he was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of flight from a peace officer with disregard to public safety, committing a felony while on bail, hit and run causing property damage, resisting a peace officer, driving while intoxicated, driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 or greater, and driving without a valid license.
