DUI Task Force Reports 2 Deaths and 29 Arrests Over Independence Day Weekend

During the Independence Day weekend, 29 individuals were arrested for driving under the influence and 2 deaths were attributed to drunk drivers, according to Turlock Police. This compares to 2010’s 49 DUI arrests and no deaths.

The Independence Day Weekend Avoid the 12 DUI Task Force has concluded with the deployment of three Sobriety Checkpoints, multiple special DUI Saturation Patrols and officers on routine patrol focusing special attention towards the impaired driver, working to lower deaths/injuries on the streets and highways.

From 12:01am Friday, July 1, 2011 through Midnight Monday, July 4, 2011 officers representing 12 county law enforcement agencies arrested 29 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In 2010, 49 DUI arrests occurred during the 4 day July 4th state holiday weekend.

Tragically, there were two deaths attributed to drunk drivers in our area! Both deaths were from incidents occurring on highway 99. Last year there were no DUI deaths reported.

These numbers are only provisional as the Modesto Police Department, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, and Oakdale Police Department have not yet reported their data.

Law enforcement officials will be conducting more Avoid Anti-DUI efforts throughout the county and region in partnership with the Nationwide 18 day campaign in August ending Labor Day weekend.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
