Election Results Roll In, Incumbents On Top

Just minutes after the 8 p.m. close of polls, initial results have become available for the 2014 Gubernatorial Primary Election.

This first wave of results includes only vote-by-mail ballots received prior to today. Updates will follow throughout the night as more ballots are counted.

The final results posted tonight will still not include between 5,000 and 10,000 vote-by-mail ballots, dropped off by voters at polling places. Those will be counted and added to the tally before final results are certified within 28 days.

Though a number of statewide primaries were on the ballot, most local attention was turned toward a trio of heated Stanislaus County races. None of the three are currently close, with incumbents leading each race by a roughly 2:1 margin.

  • Appointed Incumbent Assessor Don Gaekle is leading Turlock City Councilwoman Amy Bublak, a Modesto Police Officer.
  • Incumbent District Attorney Birgit Fladager is leading Frank Carson, a Modesto-based attorney and businessman.
  • Incumbent Stanislaus County Sheriff-Coroner Adam Christianson is leading Tom Letras, a deputy sheriff from Ceres.

U.S. Rep. Jeff Denham (R) and Michael Eggman (D), a Turlock farmer, look to move on to the November election for the California 10th District seat, beating Mike Barkley (D), a Manteca lawyer and CPA. Two propositions both look to pass: Proposition 41, the Veterans Housing and Homeless Prevention Bond Act of 2014, which will sell $600 million in bonds to fund affordable housing for low-income and homeless veterans, and Proposition 42, which will require local governments to comply with public access laws, but would cut tens of millions of dollars in state funding to comply with those laws.

A number of other elections were, effectively, determined prior to today’s vote, due to lack of opposition.

In primaries, Assemblywoman Kristin Olsen (R-Modesto) will move to the November ballot, where she will face Harinder Grewal (D-Keyes), a Stanislaus County agricultural inspector who also serves on the Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees. And State Sen. Tom Berryhill (R-Twain Harte) will face businesswoman Paulina Miranda (D-Fresno) in a race for a new, massive State Senate District which will include Turlock.

In local races, Tom Chagnon ran unopposed and retain his seat as the County Superintendent of Schools. Treasurer-Tax Collector Gordon B. Ford also ran unopposed, as did Stanislaus County Clerk-Recorder Lee Lundrigan and Stanislaus County Auditor-Controller Lauren Klein. Nine Stanislaus County Superior Court judges will also retain their judgeships for lack of opposition.

8:45 p.m. Update: The second wave of election results have been released, and incumbents continue their firm grasp on all local elections.

Greater than half of precincts are now reporting, 55.74 percent of the total.

More than 25,000 votes have been counted, roughly one-third of the 75,000 votes cast in the average Gubernatorial Primary Election. But poll workers noted that Election Day was slower than usual, so Stanislaus County could be on track to cast just 50,000 ballots. That’s less than one-quarter of the more than half of the 211,000-plus registered voters in the county.

U.S. Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Turlock) was one of those to cast his vote today, at the Monte Vista Chapel polling place in Turlock. TurlockCityNews.com reporters are currently on-scene at the Denham and Micheal Eggman (D-Turlock) Election Night parties, and will update this article with their comments as the night goes on.
