Emanuel Medical Center Offers April Classes and Support Groups

Emanuel Medical Center will offer the following classes and support groups in April.

 

Cancer Support Groups

Young Adults with Cancer (ages 18 to 40) meets the second Tuesday of every month.  Next meeting is April 12, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Emanuel Cancer Center’s conference room. 
 
Monkey Business – This is an eight-week support group for kids (ages 5 to 13) whose loved one has cancer.  Next session begins April 11.  The group meets for eight consecutive Mondays from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
 
Survivorship Series – Emanuel Cancer Center’s new Survivorship Series are educational podcasts with time for supportive communication for patients and families. New concerns and emotions often arise once a patient is no longer in active treatment. The purpose of this series is to address the changes of day-to-day life after treatment. These are the topics for April:
•             April 12, 5 to 6 p.m. – Living with, through and beyond cancer; trouble sleeping and sleeping tips
•             April 22, 11 a.m. to noon – The importance of taking medications on schedule and understanding adherence
•             April 26, 5 to 6 p.m. – Examining feelings of sadness after treatment ends
 
Cancer support groups are free of charge.  Please contact Emanuel Cancer Center at (209) 664-2434 to register and for any questions.  All programs are conducted at Emanuel Cancer Center, 880 E. Tuolumne Ave., Turlock.
 
 
Diabetes Education
Living with Diabetes – This two-day class is designed for people newly diagnosed with diabetes or those looking to better manage their diabetes. A referral from your doctor is required. April 26 and 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. Class will meet in the hospital’s East Wing, Conference Room C. Call (209) 664-2583 for more information and to register.
 
 
Childbirth Classes
Prepare for your baby’s arrival by learning about birth, relaxation and coping skills for labor and parenting, breast feeding and new parent care.  Caesarian birth, post-birth care of mom and baby, and baby care included. Two-day weekend course taught in English. April 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and April 10 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Preregistration and $40 fee required. Textbook included.   Sunday’s class includes the tour of the Mary Stuart Rogers Birthing Center at Emanuel. Class limited to 15 couples to assure personal attention and plenty of time for questions. Other Support Groups
Breastfeeding and Beyond – New mom’s breastfeeding support group meets weekly on Tuesdays from 1 to  2 p.m. in the Mother Baby waiting room adjacent to the Mary Stuart Rogers Birthing Center at Emanuel. Nursing moms and babies welcome. No preregistration needed. There is no fee. Baby weight checks available.  Bring your questions and concerns and network with other new moms in the area.
 
 
Basic Life Support (BLS) Classes
Renewal Course – American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Renewal Course. Must have current BLS card.  Pre-registration and class preparation is required. Call (209) 664-2580 for more information or to register. April 5 from 8:30 a.m. to noon, or April 19 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the hospital’s East Wing, Conference Room D/E.
 
 
Initial Course – American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Initial Course. Pre-registration and class preparation is required. Call (209) 664-2580 for more information or to register. April 20 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the hospital’s East Wing, Conference Room D/E.
 
 
Free Blood Pressure Check
Provided courtesy of the Emanuel Medical Center Volunteer Auxiliary and conducted by a retired nurse.  No appointment needed.  All information is confidential. April 26, 10 to 11 a.m. Education Training Room in the hospital’s East Wing.
