Emanuel Medical Center Offers Classes and Support Groups in March

Emanuel Medical Center will offer a variety of classes and support groups in March.

 
 
Cancer Support Groups
Young Adults with Cancer (ages18 to 40) meets the second Tuesday of every month.  Next meeting is March 8, 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Emanuel Cancer Center’s conference room. 
 
Survivorship Series – Emanuel Cancer Center’s new survivorship series begins March 8. These are educational podcasts with time for supportive communication for patients and families. New concerns and emotions often arise once a patient is no longer in active treatment. The purpose of this series is to address the changes of day to day life after treatment. These are the topics for March:
•             March 8, 5 to 6 p.m. – Living with, through and beyond cancer; communicating with your health care team after treatment; making the most of your visit.
•             March 22, 5 to 6 p.m. – Living with, through and beyond cancer; finding hope and meaning after treatment.
•             March 25, 11 a.m. to noon – Update on metastatic breast cancer.
 
Cancer support groups are free of charge.  Please contact Emanuel Cancer Center at (209) 664-2434 to register and for any questions.  All programs are conducted at Emanuel Cancer Center, 880 E. Tuolumne Ave., Turlock.
 

Grief Support Groups                     
Circle of Comfort, a support group for bereaved parents begins March 2, 6 to 8 p.m.
 
Loss of Spouse Support Group begins March 7, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
 
Children’s Support Group (ages 5-10) March 15, 4 to 5:30 p.m.
                                              
Adolescents Support Group (ages 11-16) March 15, 6 to 8 p.m.
 
Journey through Grief Support Group begins March 16, 7 to 9 p.m.
 
Pre-registration is required for grief support groups. There is no fee, but a $15 donation to Hospice of Emanuel is suggested. For more information, contact Sandy Ricardo at (209) 664-2550.
 

Hospice Volunteer Training
Hospice of Emanuel has a two-day training session for people wishing to become a Hospice volunteer. The spring training is scheduled on March 26 and April 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Participants must attend both classes to complete the volunteer training. Pre-registration is required – call (209) 664-2550.
 

Other Support Groups
Breastfeeding and Beyond – New mom’s breastfeeding support group meets weekly on Tuesdays from 1 to  2 p.m. in the Mother Baby waiting room adjacent to the Marty Stuart Rogers Birthing Center at Emanuel. Nursing moms and babies welcome. No preregistration needed. There is no fee. Baby weight checks available.  Bring your questions and concerns, network with other new moms in our area.

Diabetes Classes

March 22 is the American Diabetes Association Alert Day, and Emanuel Medical Center presents “Prevent Diabetes,” a class that can help reduce you and your family’s risk of developing diabetes. This class will cover weight management, exercise and other strategies to prevent diabetes and will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the hospital’s East Wing, Conference Room C. Living with Diabetes – This two-day class is designed for people newly diagnosed with diabetes or those looking to better manage their diabetes. A referral from your doctor is required. March 1 and March 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. Call (209) 664-2583 for more information.
 

Childbirth Classes
Two-day weekend course taught in English. March 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and March 13 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Preregistration and $40 fee required. Textbook included. Prepare for your baby’s arrival by learning about birth, relaxation and coping skills for labor and parenting, breast feeding and new parent care.  Caesarian birth, post birth care of mom and baby, and baby care included.  Sunday’s class includes the tour of the Mary Stuart Rogers Birthing Center at Emanuel. Class limited to 15 couples to assure personal attention and plenty of time for questions. Call (209) 664-2580 for more information and to register. One-day class taught in Spanish. March 19, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Preregistration and $25 fee required.  Textbook included.  Focus on labor relaxation and comfort techniques, the birth process and mom/baby care.  Class is limited to 15 couples to assure personal attention and plenty of time for questions.  Call (209) 664-2580 for more information or to register

Basic Life Support Classes
Renewal Course – American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers Renewal Course. Must have current BLS card.  Pre-registration and class preparation is required. Call (209) 664-2580 for more information or to register. March 8 or March 29 from 8:30 a.m. to noon, in the hospital’s East Wing, Conference Room D/E.

Free Blood Pressure Check
Provided courtesy of the Emanuel Medical Center Volunteer Auxiliary and conducted by a retired nurse.  No appointment needed.  All information is confidential. March 28, 10 to 11 a.m.
