A fire at a Turlock church caused about $100,000 in damage Wednesday, but no one was injured.

At 4:37 p.m., the Turlock Fire Department responded to a 911 call at the St. Thomas Church, located at 2907 N. Berkeley Ave., on the report of a commercial fire.

Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the kitchen area of the church’s Social Hall. The Social Hall is a separate building behind the church.

Firefighters entered the building for a rapid search and found it to be unoccupied.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire within 15 minutes of arrival. Extensive overhaul of the incident took about two hours.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental. Workers were using flammable liquids to clean paint in the kitchen area.

The Fire Department estimated that the fire caused about $100,000 in damage. The kitchen was said to be a “total loss,” while the rest of the building was heavily damaged by smoke.

No injuries were reported.

The Turlock Fire Department reminds citizens to be cautious when using flammable liquids in enclosed areas or around appliances.
