Area gun enthusiasts should act quickly the Turlock Gun Show will be held this weekend, May 17 and 18 at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds.
The show will last from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10, and entry is good for both days.
The Turlock Gun Show is hosted by Code of the West Productions out of California. For those who have never been to a gun show, it’s promised to be quite the experience. It’s good to be prepared when going into it, whether you’re there to buy, sell or trade. Attendees must practice safety procedures, such as making sure all firearms are unloaded and secure. Clips must be empty; even if your carry is open and secured with a tie, the magazine should be empty of ammo. Many promoters require all firearms to be wire-tied through the action, and sometimes it’s required to check firearms in at the front door. Attendees must also make sure that they are familiar with not only gun safety practices but also firearm practices surrounding self-defense in regards to our state regulation. Also, never point a firearm at someone guns aren’t toys, and therefore should not be treated like them. You must also know the state, city and county laws there are no excuses. Check local ordinances before attending a show.
They also include some tips for attendees, like showing up early and bringing cash. Not all venues have an ATM readily available and many vendors will not accept checks. Also, some vendors will charge a 3 to 4 percent fee on credit card purchases. You might want to bring a small dolly, as ammunition is heavy. Identification is also necessary, as 99 percent of the time you will be asked to provide a government-issued ID when purchasing a firearm.
Finally, Code of the West provides advice on being careful about dealers. Attendees are advised to use a calculator to price check transactions. Also, use your phone to check other dealers for better deals.
“Don’t believe everything you hear,” the website states. “Dealers are salesmen and sometimes may tell you anything you wish to hear.”
And the most important tip? “Don’t be a jerk,” the list concludes. “No one wants to deal with a jerk.”
The gun show will occur at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds, 900 N. Broadway in Turlock. If you’re unable to make the show this weekend, there’ll be another show Oct. 11 and 12 of this year.
