Jessica’s House Third Annual Summer Day Camp to Skyrocket Spirits

Because grief comes in all sizes, Jessica’s House is hosting a summer day camp for children who have experienced the loss of a parent or sibling.

Jessica’s House is a place for grieving children, teens, young adults, and families to share their experiences through art, talking, and play.

“Research shows that children who don’t have a place to express themselves in loss don’t do as well in life, and we know events such as these make a difference,” said Erin Nelson, the executive director of Jessica’s House. “We want to support grieving families to help create a healthier and more compassionate community.”

The third annual event welcomes children ages 5 to 12 for a variety of space themed group activities to create an environment of support, trust and openness.

The daylong event on July 23 is $10 per camper, which includes all camp gear, activities and lunch. A closing ceremony, including parents, guardians or caregivers, brings Thursday’s event to a close.

“Jessica’s House is based on the model of peer support,” said Nelson. “It creates a safe place where children learn they are not alone.”

The non-profit event is scheduled to have adult and teen volunteers to help in the day’s activities.

“We are solely funded by the generosity of donors in the community. If it weren’t for the volunteers and donors, this event would not be possible,” said Nelson.
