San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick had not thrown an interception in five straight starts, until last Sunday’s 47-7 loss against the Arizona Cardinals, in Glendale, Ariz. Kaepernick threw four interceptions, a career-worst, and the Cardinals capitalized on this.
Kaepernick had a streak of 141 consecutive passing attempts. That ended when his first pass didn’t end up in the hands his receiver, but rather was caught by the Cardinals’ defensive back Justin Bethel. Minutes later, he threw another interception that was returned for a touchdown.
“It’s very hard to deal with, it’s very hard to see myself go out and play like that and hurt this team the way I did,” Kaepernick said in a post game press conference. “I nullified all the efforts of every other player on that field today. That’s something I have to fix, I have to be better for this team moving forward.”
After the tough loss in Arizona, the 49ers were coming off a 43-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh, giving them a cold start to the season. Jim Tomsula, the 49ers first-year coach, and his team are 1-2 heading into week four.
With the Green Bay Packers coming to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara this weekend, the 49ers quarterback looks to put Sunday’s game against the Cardinals behind him and move forward.
“I’m not too big on feelings. Feelings aren’t going to help me win a game,” Kaepernick said when addressing the media. “I’m focused on doing what I can to help this team win.”
Kaepernick had many missed opportunities on Sunday and did not respond well to pressure, completing 9 of 19 passes for just 67 yards and no touchdowns. He takes full credit for the loss, despite the fact the entire team was never in the game.
“That’s something I’ve worked on, as far as being able to throw catchable balls to our receivers,” Kaepernick said. “It wasn’t something that they did that took velocity off my passes. That’s something that I’ve worked on.”
As Kap looks to move on from the games against the Cardinals and the Steelers, it is important to look at the success him and his team have had in previous games against the Packers. In games Kaepernick has started, the 49ers are 3-0 against them, including two postseason wins. This helps boost the confidence of both the San Francisco quarterback and the team.
“I have confidence in myself as far as being able to go out and help this team win,” Kaepernick said. “What other people think of how I play and how I go about things really isn’t something I worry about.”
