At about 5:25pm Thursday, Turlock Police responded to a burglary that had just occurred at a residence in the 200 block of High Street.

The caller reported that a man had broken into her house and tried to grab her son.

Detective Higareda was in the area when he located a man later identified as Jaime Lopez, 39, of Turlock, matching the provided description near Smoke Depot in the 500 block of Lander Avenue. He and patrol officers made contact with Lopez and detained him without incident.

Officer Nwando then made contact with the caller and her son at the residence.

The son stated that his dog had gone outside to the front of the house when he saw Lopez hit the dog multiple times. Lopez then entered the residence, approached the son, and tried to grab him. Thankfully, a relative was able to pull the son away.

The family stated that Lopez was a stranger to them.

When officers had their dispatcher run Lopez, they discovered he was on searchable probation for auto theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person. During a subsequent probation search of his person, officers located additional drug paraphernalia.

Lopez was arrested and taken to a church parking lot to be transferred into a different officer’s vehicle who would transport him to jail. While being transferred, Lopez briefly resisted but decided to comply after speaking with Sergeant Lewis.

Lopez was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of attempted kidnapping, burglary, torturing or killing an animal, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstructing or resisting a public officer in the discharge of their duty, two counts of child abuse or endangerment under circumstances other than those likely to produce great bodily harm or death, and violation of probation.
