Man arrested after attempting to break into gas station early Thursday morning

On Thursday, September 8th, 2022, at 2:15 am, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a commercial alarm at Chevron Food Mart, 881 N Golden State Blvd, Turlock, after a motion sensor had gone off and a man had been spotted on surveillance camera prowling around the property.

An officer happened to be in the area when the call was dispatched and arrived in seconds.

Upon his arrival, he found that the glass on one of the front double doors was damaged. He also found Matthew Souza, 39, of Hilmar, acting in an erratic and paranoid manner standing on one of the trash receptacles next to a gas pump. Being that Souza was acting unusual and was alone in close proximity to the broken glass door, he was detained in handcuffs for further investigation.

During the course of the investigation, officers determined that Souza had indeed caused the damage to the glass door by kicking it, however, did not damage it enough to the point where he would have been able to make access into the building.

Ultimately, Souza was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of attempted burglary and vandalism.
