On Sunday, May 14th, 2023, at 7:23 pm, the Turlock Police Department and Stanislaus State Police Department were dispatched to a reported weapon offense that had just occurred at Walgreens, 1591 Geer Rd, Turlock, where a man had brandished a butcher knife at an employee.

When officers arrived on scene, they began speaking with the victim who told them that he had seen a man going through a dumpster on the property, so he went over to tell him to leave.

The man told the victim that he wouldn’t listen to him because he wasn’t a cop and then produced a butcher knife while making a threatening and vulgar statement to cause bodily injury. The man then left the property and began walking southbound on Geer Rd without actually carrying out the threat.

The victim provided officers with a description of the suspect and officers began searching the area for him.

A short time later, an officer located a man later identified as Claymond Short, 32, of Dixon, matching that description in the QuikStop parking lot. Short was detained at gunpoint without incident and found to be in possession of a matching knife.

When officers identified Short and had their dispatcher run him, they discovered that he had already previously been trespass admonished from Walgreens.

Officers brought the victim to Short to see if he’d be able to positively identify him as the suspect, which he was.

When questioned, Short denied producing the knife or making any threatening statements, however, stated that he had a “license to carry weapons on file” because his family was being held for ransom.

Short was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on the charge of drawing or exhibiting a deadly weapon other than a firearm in a rude or threatening manner.

The knife was recovered and booked into evidence.
