Man arrested after breaking into family member’s apartment and barricading himself Sunday afternoon

On Sunday, December 5th, 2021, at 3:48 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported residential burglary in progress at Park Place Apartments, 3501 Crowell Rd, Turlock, where a subject was forcing entry into an apartment by breaking into a front window.

As officers were arriving on scene, they received a call from the actual victim who resides at the apartment stating that Seth Mitchell, 28, of Hilmar, one of his family members, had forced entry into his apartment and no one else was inside.

The victim gave officers a key to the apartment and they attempted to make entry, however, they discovered that Mitchell had barricaded the door.

Officers eventually made entry into the apartment and when Mitchell saw them, he ran into a bedroom armed with a knife, despite being given orders to stop and being told that he was under arrest.

Officers attempted to negotiate with Mitchell, but he refused to comply.

Officers eventually formulated a tactical plan and entered the room Mitchell had barricaded himself in. Officers shot Mitchell with less than lethal bean bag rounds, overwhelming him and being able to take him into custody without causing significant injury to him.

Mitchell was ground transported by American Medical Response to a local hospital with moderate injuries. Once he was medically cleared, he was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of resisting an executive officer with violence, burglary, vandalism over $400, aggravated assault, resisting a peace officer, and trespassing.
