Man arrested after breaking into grocery store with employees inside to steal alcohol early Wednesday morning

On Wednesday, September 21st, 2022, at 12:06 am, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported commercial burglary in progress at Smart & Final Extra!, 651 N Golden State Blvd, Turlock, after a masked man had been reported to have broken a front window to the business and gone in.

As officers were responding, they received additional information that there were employees inside of the business who were hiding in the back.

Officers arrived on scene and found that one of the front windows had indeed been broken.

Officers entered the business and searched it, however, were unable to locate the suspect.

Surveillance footage was reviewed which showed the man enter the business after breaking the front window, take several bottles of alcohol, and flee the business. Surveillance footage also showed that the man was tall and was wearing distinctive clothing. His description was aired over the police radio for officers in the area to search for.

A short time later, a sergeant made contact with a man who matched the suspect’s description at Central Park, 115 S Golden State Blvd.

The man originally provided the sergeant with a fake name, however, eventually revealed that he was really Jacob Forbes, 19, of Turlock.

When the sergeant had his dispatcher run Forbes, he returned to have three felony warrants. The first was a $20,000 one out of Alameda County for vandalism, resisting an executive officer by means of threat or violence, and threatening to commit a crime which will result in death or great bodily injury to another person, the second was a no bail one out of Alameda County for assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury, and the third was a no bail one out of Fresno for battery against a peace officer or other public officer engaged in the performance of their duties and committing a crime while in custody in a local detention facility or state prison.

The alcohol bottles that were stolen from the business were located across the street from the park and witnesses in the area reported that they saw Forbes carrying them just prior to being contacted by police.

Forbes was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of burglary and falsely identifying to a peace officer, as well as his warrants.
