Man arrested after injuring Turlock police officer Tuesday afternoon

On Tuesday, September 7th, 2021, at 1:50 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported aggravated assault that had just occurred at a residence in the 700 block of E Linwood Ave, Turlock. Dispatch had received a call reporting that a subject, later identified as Carlos Freitas, 40, of Turlock, had just struck someone, possibly his wife or sister-in-law with a cane.

When officers arrived on scene and attempted to make contact with Freitas, he resisted and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, Officer Nayeli De Leon’s arm was injured. The Turlock Fire Department and American Medical Response were dispatched. De Leon was ground transported by American Medical Response to a local hospital. It is currently unknown if her arm was broken.

Freitas was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of resisting an executive officer with violence.

Witnesses reported that Freitas was on top of De Leon during the struggle. While en route to the jail, Freitas was able to move his handcuffs to the front.

De Leon is a two-year veteran of the Turlock Police Department after joining in August of 2019. She has been in the patrol unit throughout her whole career.
