Man arrested after resisting officers investigating attempted robbery Tuesday evening

On Tuesday, September 13th, 2022, at 6:58 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported assault and battery in progress at AutoZone, 1272 Geer Rd, Turlock, involving a customer and an employee.

By the time officers arrived, the customer responsible for the attack had already left. His description was provided to officers and they located him in an alleyway near the business.

Officers made contact with the man, William Haney, 31, of Oregon, and discovered that he was in possession of a concealed knife underneath his shirt after they conducted a pat search for weapons. Due to the discovery of the concealed knife, Haney was placed in handcuffs.

Back at AutoZone, other officers discovered that the incident was actually an attempted robbery.

Officers attempted to conduct an in-field showup where they would bring the victim to Haney to ask him if he was the man responsible for the attempted robbery, however, were unable to do so because Haney became hostile and resistant towards officers and had to be placed in a “The WRAP” restraint device.

There will be further follow up to determine whether or not Haney will face robbery charges.

Haney was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, obstructing or resisting a peace officer or other public officer, and violation of probation.
