Man arrested after robbing hardware store and striking loss prevention officer with vehicle Sunday afternoon

On Sunday, October 16th, 2022, at 12:30 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported robbery that had just occurred at The Home Depot, 2800 Countryside Dr, Turlock.

As officers were responding, they were told that the suspect, later identified as Anthony Vasquez, 29, of Turlock, had fled the scene in a vehicle and were provided a description of it.

One of the responding officers spotted a vehicle matching the description pull into Venice Motel, 1114 N Golden State Blvd, and stopped it. The officer made contact with and detained Vasquez for further investigation.

Officers began investigating and learned that Vasquez had entered the business and a loss prevention officer had become suspicious of him, so he began following him. The loss prevention officer spotted Vasquez grab a paint sprayer and begin walking towards the exit, so he confronted him. Vasquez threw a plastic bottle of motor oil at him, striking his hand. Vasquez then swung the paint sprayer at the loss prevention officer. The loss prevention officer followed Vasquez to his vehicle and stood behind it so that he could take a picture of its license plate, when Vasquez reversed the vehicle, struck the loss prevention officer, and fled the area.

When officers had their dispatcher run Vasquez, he returned with a $25,500 misdemeanor bench warrant for theft, possession of methamphetamines, and possession of a controlled substance.

Vasquez was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, as well as his warrants.
