At about 5:55pm Wednesday, Turlock Police responded to a shoplifting that had just occurred at Dick’s Sporting Goods in the 2700 block of Countryside Drive.

The caller reported that a man had just stolen from the business and was leaving the area on foot eastbound through the parking lot.

Officer Jimenez was responding to a different missing person call at Monte Vista Crossings and recognized the suspect description as someone he’d just seen in the Farmer Boys area. Once the missing person was found, he returned to the area to look for the suspect.

A short time later, Jimenez located and got out with the suspect in the 2200 block of Pinto Way.

The suspect was detained and identified as Forrest Robertson, 30, of Turlock, who turned out to be on probation for theft.

The stolen merchandise was described to be a backpack and some jerseys, which matched what Robertson had thrown onto a roof near where he was contacted. Officer Ruiz used his patrol vehicle to climb up onto the roof and retrieve the stolen goods.

An in-field show-up was conducted and a witness positively identified Robertson as the suspect. The witness estimated the value of the good to be about $500 and then placed Robertson under citizen’s arrest.

Robertson was arrested and released on a citation on the charge of petty theft.

The stolen merchandise was returned to Dick’s.
