Man arrested Sunday afternoon after causing $100,000 in damage to new car wash

On Sunday, July 18th, 2021, at approximately 1:00 pm, the Turlock Police Department received a call of a vandalism that had just occurred at the Chevron located at 100 E Glenwood Ave.

When officers arrived on scene and began investigating, they discovered that an unknown male subject, later identified as Byron Zappelli, 44, of Ceres, had arrived at the gas station and entered their brand new closed car wash after going around the barricades they had set up. Staff attempted to stop Zappelli and even offered to help him reverse his vehicle out of the car wash, however, he refused. Zappelli then made a u-turn while in the car wash and floored it out of there. In doing so, he struck a gas box, several poles, various equipment, and the building itsself, causing an estimated $100,000 in damages.

While officers were speaking to witnesses, dispatch received a call of a dangerous driver matching the description of the suspect vehicle following a female in another vehicle eastbound on W Monte Vista Ave from N Tegner Rd. Officers were able to intercept them at N Berkeley Ave and E Tuolumne Rd where they made a traffic stop. After positively identifying the driver of the stopped vehicle as their suspect from the gas station incident, officers placed Zappelli under arrest for vandalism over $400.
