At about 10:30pm Wednesday night, Turlock Police arrived at a residence in the 900 block of Park Street to conduct follow-up in an assault and battery investigation.
The assault had occurred at the residence the prior night, which involved Jme Cunha, 35, of Turlock, punching and throwing a bed frame at his cohabitant, causing an injury.
As officers walked up to the residence, they could hear an active disturbance between Cunha and the victim, including Cunha screaming of anger and hitting a wall several times.
Officers announced their presence and the victim exited the residence.
During a subsequent security sweep of the residence, officers located Cunha hiding.
As officers were in the process of arresting Cunha, he struck an officer’s face, but didn’t cause an injury.
After the arrest, Cunha was taken outside and began to hit his head hard on a patrol vehicle’s window, breaking it and causing a large cut on his head.
Cunha had to be held to the ground and eventually placed in a WRAP restraint device, at which point he began violently kicking at officers.
Turlock Fire responded and cleaned Cunha’s head up.
Afterward, Cunha began aggressively yelling at an involved person who was standing across the street.
As Cunha was placed in a different patrol vehicle, he began hitting his head against the window partition of that one from the inside. A protective helmet was placed on his head, yet he continued to do the same.
American Medical Response was requested to do the transport so they could strap Cunha’s entire body down.
Cunha was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance.
Afterward, Cunha was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, vandalism, attempting to deter or resist an executive officer in the performance of their duty by means of threat or violence, battery against a public officer, and obstructing or resisting a public officer in the discharge of their duty.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t Cunha’s first time doing something similar. Back in August, after a domestic violence kidnapping incident involving the same victim, Cunha had assaulted and spit on three different officers, requiring to be placed in a WRAP, spit mask, and protective helmet at that time as well.
