On Saturday, June 5th, 2021, at approximately 3:15 pm, the Turlock Police Department received a call of a suspicious person inside the Old Navy located at 2831 Countryside Dr. The caller reported that there was a person in the store that had shoplifted in the past and was possibly shoplifting again.
Officers arrived on scene and spoke with loss prevention, who told them that the suspect, later identified as Randall McCartney, 34, of Turlock, had been on surveillance shoplifting from the store in the past. Loss prevention requested that McCartney be escorted out of the business and trespass admonished.
An officer made contact with McCartney after being pointed out by loss prevention and he advised him that he needed to leave the store. As the officer walked McCartney to the door, he told him he was being detained and not free to leave.
When asked for his name, McCartney provided a false name. Upon exiting the store, McCartney began to flee on foot. A foot pursuit ensued and McCartney was apprehended and arrested after running through traffic on Countryside Dr.
McCartney was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety on charges of resisting a peace officer and providing a false name to a peace officer. Stolen merchandise from the store was located on McCartney after being searched incident to arrest, however, the store refused to prosecute and the merchandise was returned to them.
