Margaret Evaline Hatch Lewis

Margaret Evaline Hatch Lewis

November 8, 1922 – November 10, 2019

Margaret Evaline Hatch was born at the family farm home in Owasco, NY, November 8, 1922. She passed away on November 10, 2019 in Turlock, CA at the age of 97.  Margie was preceded in death by her two siblings: Lee W. Hatch, Sr. and Alice Josephine Hatch Davey Butler. She attended The Octagon School in Skaneateles and graduated from Skaneateles High School in 1941.

At a young age doctors discovered she was born with what was termed dislocation of both hips and underwent surgeries to enable her to walk. Although a challenge, this helped form an indomitable character and spirit that guided her entire life.  Those who knew Margie (or Marg as she was called by friends), admired her determination to do everything others could do.  She would find a way!! And she did.

Margie excelled at garment sewing, knitting, and later in life, quilting.  She enjoyed hand applique, and completed several beautiful quilts.  She was a perfectionist in all she attempted.

She lived in upstate New York most of her adult life and worked for Nationwide Insurance and IBM as a secretary and office manager at the time when typewriters were replaced with the first word processing machines.

Margie met O. Craig Lewis at a professional organization meeting, and they married June 22, 1963 in Syracuse, NY.  After retirement, she and Craig moved to Skaneateles. Throughout Margie’s life, she cared for many family members until the end of their lives: her parents, her sister, her in-laws, and her husband, never once shirking from their needs.

After being widowed, Margie spent several winters with family in California to escape the NY winter weather.  After her belongings were packed and sent to California in 2006, Margie and her niece Peggy set out for Margie’s once in a lifetime drive across the United States visiting many sights along the way.  Margie lived in Turlock until her passing.

Margie is survived by her nephew Lee W Hatch, Jr. (Joan) and his three daughters, Tracy Cockrell, Shelley Hatch Maynard and Monica Hatch Burgess, all from California, and niece Peggy Hatch St George (Cecil Oxford) from Washington State. She is also survived by several great, great nieces and nephews in California, and family and friends in Skaneateles, NY and surrounding communities. She was a lifelong Methodist.

Margie will be remembered for her fun-loving spirit, kindness, grace, and caring.  Please share any memories of your encounters with Margie here, so they can be shared with others who knew and loved her.

Her wish is to be buried next to her husband, Craig, at Lakeview Cemetery in Skaneateles, NY in the Spring.

Remembrances may be made in Margaret and Craig Lewis’ names to the Skaneateles United Methodist Church, 26 Jordan St, Skaneateles, NY 13152, to aid in the restoration of the church’s stained-glass windows, or to Hospice of the Finger Lakes, 1130 Corporate Dr,  Auburn, NY 13021, who cared for her husband during his illness.
