Market Street To Become One-Way, Council Meeting Review

Turlock's Market Street will soon become one-way between West Main Street and Broadway, following the Turlock City Council's unanimous approval on Tuesday.

Currently, Market Street is one-way eastbound from West Main Street to Third Street, and two-way between Third Street and Broadway. As cars cross Third Street, they have to jog slightly to the right, avoiding the oncoming traffic in the new left lane.

Following the change drivers will continue straight on the one-way, without a need for the jog right. Additionally, drivers will be able to better see traffic on Broadway when stopped at the intersection, reducing the chance of collisions.

The former right-hand lane will be converted in to three new parking spaces.

As the road is primarily used for eastbound traffic, little impact is expected on traffic flow.

The work to convert the road section is expected to cost less than $250.

On Tuesday, the Turlock City Council also:
• Approved a contract for tree trimming and maintenance services with Trees Inc., of Houston.
Councilmember Amy Bublak initially opposed the contract, wanting to spend money in Turlock rather than support a Texas-based company. The company has local work crews, and also provides the Modesto Irrigation District with tree trimming services.
At Bublak's request, the council approved the agreement with a shorter term than originally proposed – 12 months, instead of 38. Councilmember Forrest White voted against the contract.
• Heard a monthly update from the Turlock City Arts Commission.
• Issued proclamations in honor of Turlock volunteers, Arbor Day, and Bike to Work Week.
• Issued a letter in opposition of Senate Bill 7, which would prohibit charter cities from receiving or using state funding if the city authorizes a contractor to not comply with prevailing wage requirements on projects funded by non-state/city funds.
• Conferenced with labor negotiators in closed session.
