More People Signing up for Parks, Rec Programs, Tournaments

A few Turlock Parks and Recreation programs have enjoyed substantial growth in the past year.

The City of Turlock's adult softball program has surged, growing from 288 to 305 teams. Each team, comprised of at least 10 players, pays between $345 and $680 to play.

Youth dance classes drew 350 participants this year. And T-Ball has experienced sensational growth, up to 540 kids playing from 380, a number that should stay high given the multi-year nature of T-ball.

"We should see significant numbers for a few years," said Turlock Recreation Supervisor Mark Crivelli.

Youth basketball programs added 50 participants, a significant number given the amount of competing youth basketball programs.

And the number of local tournaments surged, with 44 baseball and softball tournaments at Pedretti Park and 15 soccer tournaments at Turlock Regional Sports Complex, more than double the 7 held last year. Each soccer tournament brings in 50 to 80 teams, comprised of 11 to 15 players plus families staying in hotels, eating in local restaurants, and benefiting the economy.

"It's been a big boost," Crivelli said.

Overall, enrollment numbers have stayed fairly flat outside of the noted areas, Crivelli said.

"Those few things we did have increases in, that helped us actually show an increase this year," Crivelli said. "It was a good year for us."
