A walkway in Turlock's northeast storm basin could soon be named “Singh Walkway,” in honor of the city's Indian-American community.

On Wednesday, the Turlock Parks, Recreation and Community Programs Commission will consider making the name official.

The naming was requested by Dr. Ram Saini, who has lived in Turlock since 1971. He noted the city's sizable Indian-American population, comprising doctors, professors, farmers, elected officials, and gas station owners.

“We sincerely hope that the Commission or City Council accept our request and recognize Indian-American community people who are an integral part of our city,” Saini wrote in a letter to the commission.

Saini requested that the “Singh” name be used because it is a well-known last name in India. The name is used by Sikhs and some Hindu communities.

After consultation with Turlock city staff, it was determined that the northeast storm basin walkway, on Christofferson Parkway, was the most feasible option for renaming. Signage could be installed near the landscaped pump station, at Saini's expense.

On Wednesday, the Turlock Parks, Recreation and Community Programs Commission is also expected to:
• Receive Brown Act training, an annual refresher on the state's public meetings law.
• Select a commissioner to sit on the Turlock Police Activities League Board.

The Turlock Parks, Recreation and Community Programs Commission will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Yosemite Room of Turlock City Hall, 156 S. Broadway.
