Pedestrian walking in roadway struck and killed by vehicle early Friday morning

On Friday, August 19th, 2022, at 12:16 am, the California Highway Patrol, Keyes Fire Protection District, and American Medical Response were dispatched to a reported vehicle collision with injuries near the intersection of N Golden State Blvd and W Barnhart Rd, Turlock.

When crews arrived on scene, they found a single vehicle involved, a silver Ford sedan, which had struck a pedestrian who was down in the roadway.

The pedestrian, later identified as Michael Burks, 51, of Modesto, was ground transported by American Medical Response to a local hospital with major injuries which he later succumbed to. The driver and only occupant of the silver Ford sedan, Kaisee Budworth, 32, of Turlock, did not suffer any injuries.

Budworth’s vehicle sustained minor damage.

Officers began investigating and determined that Budworth was traveling southbound on N Golden State Blvd at a speed between forty and 45 miles per hour, while Burks was walking in the middle of the southbound lane just south of her vehicle wearing all black clothing. As Budworth approached Burks, the front of her vehicle collided with him as she was unable to see him and stop in time due to the limited lighting in the area and the fact that he was wearing dark clothing.

The investigation remains on-going. Anyone with information that could assist in the investigation is encouraged to call Officer Jeff Abrahamson at 209-545-7440.
