Turlock Police and Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputies apprehended a man who barricaded himself inside a home near the intersection of Kenwood and Starr avenues on Saturday morning.

According to neighbors, the incident began when a woman inside the house began screaming earlier Saturday morning. She was so loud, neighbors said, that she could be heard from several houses away.

Turlock Police and Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputies arrived to the county island quickly and removed the woman, they said. Neighbors also said that police were called to the site on Wednesday, allegedly finding the same woman raped and badly beaten.

A man was inside the home, though, and refused to come out.

Neighbors said that the two were squatting in the home, which is bank-owned. The block has many vacant homes and is rife with crime, neighbors said.

“We want the drug traffic, the crime to stop,” said one neighbor who asked not to be named. “I want to be able to sleep with the window open.”

Police called in reinforcements, including a fire truck which blocked the entrance of Kenwood Avenue at Canal Drive and a K-9 unit. Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputies yelled through a speaker that if the man did not come out with his hands up, the dog would find him and bite him. Officers and Deputies had their guns drawn.

Police emerged with an African-American man in custody at approximately 11:45 a.m. Neighbors said they believe the man went by the name “Slim.”

Though the incident seemed major, it's a regular Saturday for the block, neighbors said. The only problem is, most crimes aren't reported.

“I've been here for only a year, and I'm appalled by the unwritten code of not calling the cops,” one neighbor said.

Turlock Police and the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department have yet to provide any official comment on the incident.
