Police Arrest Man After Standoff on Vermont Ave.

Turlock police arrested a man on Sunday morning after the suspect holed up in a residence on Vermont Avenue.

Police entered the residence with the help of Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department canine units and were able to apprehend the suspect, who had an outstanding warrant.

Jose Cortez, 26, of Ceres, was arrested on possession of narcotics, obstruction of justice, trespassing, and an outstanding warrant from the Ceres Police Department for domestic violence.

Turlock police originally responded to a suspicious person report. Upon arriving at Columbia Park, where the suspect was, Cortez allegedly fled toward Vermont Avenue, said Turlock police spokesperson Sgt. Victor Barcelos.

Cortez fled into a home in the 500 block of Vermont Avenue, where police quickly arrived.

The residents of the home told police that they did not know the suspect who had entered the home, said Barcelos.

However, residents of the neighborhood said that the suspect had been at the home on Saturday.

Police surrounded the home, and once they received approval from the residents they entered the home, with the help of Sheriff’s Department canine units, to search for the suspect, said Barcelos.

Sheriffs were in the area at the time and offered their services to the Turlock Police Department.

Upon entering the house, authorities were able to locate the suspect, who was hiding somewhere in the house, and bring him into custody without further incident.
