Sheriff Seeking Person of Interest in Turlock Rest Stop Death

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department is asking for help locating a person of interest in a suspicious death at a Turlock rest stop on Feb. 26.

Detectives are looking for Cheryl Ruth Liberty, 64, of Modesto, as the person of interest in the case.

Fire and medical services responded to the Enoch Christoffersen Rest Stop off northbound Highway 99 at 8:02 p.m. on Feb. 26 to give medical aid.

Medical aid was delivered to Christina Cardoza, 41, but Cardoza died at the scene and law enforcement was called. The death was deemed “suspicious” at the time.

According to detectives, Cardoza had sustained an injury near Campbell Boulevard and Winton Parkway in Livingston earlier that day. It is unknown at this time if the injury is related to the cause of death.

Detectives are awaiting results of the autopsy and toxicology results, which take four to six weeks, to determine the cause of death.

Anyone with information on the location of Liberty or information on this case is asked to call Det. Gregory Buck at 209-525-7103.
