At about 3:39pm Tuesday afternoon, Turlock Police responded to a weapon offense that had just occurred at a residence in the 600 block of Julian Street.

The caller, who didn’t speak English and needed an interpreter, reported that his 22-year-old son had shot a gun into the air inside the house. He also stated that he thought his son did this because his girlfriend was doing witchcraft on him.

As officers arrived on scene, everyone evacuated from the house, except the son.

Officers set up a perimeter around the area, which included a police canine and drone, and began speaking with the son over the phone, trying to get him to peacefully surrender.

After about 30 minutes, the son exited the residence and surrendered. He was detained without incident.

Officers were given consent to enter the residence and retrieve the gun. They located a .22 rifle in the son’s bedroom.

Through the investigation, it was discovered that the son hadn’t really done this because his girlfriend was doing witchcraft on him, but it was rather an accidental discharge.

No crimes were committed, so the son was released from detention, but the firearm was taken for safekeeping.
